If you thought that 007, Assassins Creed and Shakespeare shouldn't have anything to do with one another, then you are like me before I read this book. I was wrong. Mr Quercia has managed to blend them all together in a perfect harmony while providing text-book history in spades. Don't think of your old boring history teacher though, he does it in a thoroughly entertaining way that is hilarious. In License to Quill Mr Quercia manages to make learning about history actually cool, something that only very few people in the world are capable of. 10/10, none of this five star business.

The concept seemed intriguing, but it soon wore thin. I found the non-fiction book on basically the same topic (sans Marlowe), THE YEAR OF LEAR, much more satisfying.
This was relatively engaging but not very memorable. It seemed an old fashioned version of 007
A compelling story with well developed characters and a plot that is universal and timeless. How historically true it is remains the question.
A fun play on a James Bond theme set in Elizabethan England. A good read with some interesting overlaps with real historic events.
Answers the question what if William Shakespeare was James Bond. Didn't know it needed answered until I heard it. Great read.

Jacopo della Quercia has crafted a compelling tale of espionage, shifting alliances, feats of daring and the supernatural. Characters are clearly and humanely delineated, particularly William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. The conspiracy between the Gunpowder Plot hatched by Guy (Guido) Fawkes and his cadre is meticulously described. The rationale for the creation of THE SCOTTISH PLAY, is fascinating whether or not it is academically verifiable. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
