Brent Weeks has done a great job sculpting this world and it's characters... An interesting and unique magic system, excellent protagonists, characters you actually get invested in, and a few story threads without getting too convoluted and overwhelming. The main character slowly grows on you, and Gavin (the second protagonist) is a fantastic character who you love right away... The use of humor helps things, and the story is always moving forward, without getting mired in too much pointless dialogue.

I'm glad to be reading this series and hope that Weeks keeps it going strong!

As a big fan of fantasy novels, I can be pretty picky. This series has everything I love about Fantasy, plus a few bonuses! While the beginning might feel a little slow, about halfway through the pace really picks up, and it's a race to the finish just to see what happens. I think my favorite part about this series is the magic system, which basically acts like an extra set of physics rules for certain people. If you like Brandon Sanderson books, you'll love this series! Also, the diverse cast of characters is WONDERFUL, with plenty of amazing women and other people of color, which is something that a lot of SF/F books are lacking. Fascinating magic, fascinating characters, fascinating political structure, and just a fascinating world altogether. These books are big, but are action-packed, and have a little something for everyone inside!
While the storyline and plot are interesting and novel, the actual writing is just this side of atrocious. Typography errors, punctuation errors (end quotes often missing, starting quotes also absent in some cases) and incredible grammatical errors.

For example, the phrase “on accident” is used in several places. If being said by a character, one could give the benefit of the doubt and attribute it to the character’s own speech. However, in other places, it is used as part of the narrative. Even most 8th graders understand that things happen *by* accident and *on purpose*. They do not happen “on accident.” Perhaps I notice it as it is one of my grammatical pet peeves but even the most inexperienced copywriter should catch these kinds of errors. Usually these kinds of mistakes occur in self published and/or electronic copies. These were paberbacks.

I find it incredibly difficult to reconcile the writing of this series with that of the “Night Angel” trilogy. Austensibly written by the same author, the sophomoric writing in the “Lightbringer” series is stunning when compared to that of the “Night Angel” series.

One might attribute the discrepancy thinking that the “Lightbringer” series was the authors first work but it is not. The “Night Angel” series is FAR superior than that of the “Lightbringer” series. I am at a loss trying to understand how the very good writing was produced earlier in the writers career.

The plot moves extremely slowly and the writing is full of inane and extraneous sentences. As an example, the author talks twice about the number of individuals entering an elevator. This is bad in two ways. First, it’s irrelevant, adding nothing to the plot. Second, it’s described a second time. I see now why each book is ~700 pages long.

The “Night Angel” series was quite good; entertaining, plot twists and turns, some interesting commentary on the nature of good an evil and good character development. I mistakenly anticipated similar quality in the “Lightbringer” series. I was wrong.

Having said all that I do find the plot to be of some interest, although it feels like trying to run through thick mud. Interesting and novel in its use of light as power. I will finish the series but can not recommend it to anyone else.
So, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to fantasy novels. I've been reading them(consuming them, really) for more than 22 years at this point, and I'm pretty quick to call out trash as trash. Long gone are my days of poorly written branded books about Drow, and if it isn't intelligently written with characters that make sense, I'm not particularly interested. To give you an idea of my tastes some of my favorites are the Otherland series, all the Farseer novels, and of course a Song of Ice and Fire. All that being said, I kind of looked at the Lightbringer books years ago, thought it looked like easy reading garbage, and wrote it off completely. Finally, in the last few months I was hard up enough for reading that I decided to read them anyway. I coudn't feel worse and more wrong about that initial assessment now. While they are all a bit on the faster reading side, they're written EXCELLENTLY, with a coherent, unique and original magic system that backs up a good story. I'm not going to get into the detail of the plotline, and to be honest I generally don't write reviews of books on here, but I wanted to write this on the chance someone else might see this who had been writing these books off or not giving them a chance- please do so, you'll be very happy you did.
